Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve is being pinched in the lower back area. The causes may be the bones in the lumbar or pelvis area go out of position, or caused by a herniated disc. A chiropractor can determine the cause of the sciatica and treat it accordingly. By relaxing the muscles and gently re-positioning the bones in the lower back area, the sciatica may be corrected. Alternating 20 minutes of ice to decrease the inflammation and 20 minutes of heat to relax the muscle spasms and bring circulation to the area would be beneficial at home. Having good posture while sitting and using proper body mechanics when bending would be helpful in preventing sciatica. Also, exercising daily helps to maintain strong back muscles.
